📋 A NOTE FROM MY WORKBENCH: As an Authorized Bang & Olufsen Service Provider, I have factory access to documentation, genuine parts, and specialized training for the Beogram 8000, 8002, 9500, and RX2. These are sophisticated tangential-tracking turntables. My email is jt@tekmg.com for direct inquiries.
⚠️ CRITICAL WARNING – BEOGRAM 8000/8002/9500/RX2 SPECIFIC: These turntables have common failure points: (1) Dried lubricant in the tangential arm mechanism, (2) Failed electrolytic capacitors in the power supply and RIAA preamp (8002/9500), (3) Worn drive belt, (4) Datalink communication issues, (5) Deteriorated cartridge suspension.

📜 A Brief History of Beogram 8000/8002/9500/RX2

Beogram 8000 (1981-1985): The Beogram 8000 was the flagship turntable of B&O's early 1980s lineup. It featured a sophisticated tangential-tracking tonearm, electronic speed control, and a sleek aluminum design. The 8000 set new standards for tracking accuracy and sonic performance.

Beogram 8002 (1985-1989): The Beogram 8002 was an updated version of the 8000 with refined electronics and an integrated RIAA preamp. This allowed direct connection to line-level inputs, eliminating the need for a separate phono stage. The 8002 also featured improved Datalink connectivity for seamless system integration.

Beogram 9500 (1992-1997): The Beogram 9500 was the ultimate expression of B&O's turntable engineering. Featuring a redesigned tangential arm, quartz-locked speed control, integrated RIAA preamp, and the reference-grade MMC20CL cartridge, the 9500 is considered by many collectors to be the best-sounding Beogram ever produced.

Beogram RX2 (1986-1991): The Beogram RX2 was a popular mid-range tangential-tracking turntable that offered excellent performance at a more accessible price point. It features electronic speed control, a reliable tangential arm mechanism, and Datalink connectivity. The RX2 is widely available and represents excellent value for collectors.

💡 KEY DIFFERENCES: The Beogram 8000 and RX2 require an external RIAA preamp. The 8002 and 9500 feature integrated RIAA preamps. The Beogram 9500 is the flagship with quartz-locked speed control and MMC20CL cartridge.

📚 Beogram Stacking & Usage Notes

📀 Beogram 8000/8002 Stacking Information:
  • These turntables were designed to stack with Beomaster 8000/8002 receivers and Beocord 8000/8002 tape decks.
  • The Beogram 8002's integrated RIAA preamp allows direct connection to line-level inputs.
  • Arrangement Tip: For proper ventilation, place the Beomaster on top or use a dedicated shelf.
📀 Beogram 9500 Stacking Information:
  • The Beogram 9500 was designed to pair with Beomaster 9500 and Beocord 9500.
  • Features quartz-locked speed control for exceptional accuracy.

⚠️ Common Beogram Issues – What I Fix

🔴 ISSUE #1: Tangential Arm Not Moving / Sticking (ALL MODELS)

The tangential arm mechanism uses a servo system with a metal rail and ball bearings. Old lubricant hardens, causing the arm to stick or move erratically. I completely disassemble, clean, and relubricate the entire tangential mechanism.

🔴 ISSUE #2: Capacitor Failure (ALL MODELS)

Electrolytic capacitors in the power supply, motor control, and RIAA preamp (8002/9500) dry out, causing speed instability, hum, distortion, or no power. I perform a complete recap of all boards using premium Japanese capacitors.

🔴 ISSUE #3: Datalink Communication Failure (ALL MODELS)

Datalink issues prevent remote control and auto-start functions. I repair Datalink circuits, replace opto-isolators, and test communication lines.

🔴 ISSUE #4: Drive Belt Stretched/Broken (ALL MODELS)

The drive belt stretches over time, causing speed inaccuracy and wow/flutter. I replace the belt with a genuine or factory-spec replacement.

🔴 ISSUE #5: Integrated RIAA Preamp Issues (8002/9500)

The built-in phono preamp can develop problems due to failed capacitors or op-amps. I recap and repair the RIAA preamp section.

🔴 ISSUE #6: Speed Instability (9500 Quartz-Locked)

The quartz-locked speed control can drift due to failed capacitors. I recap the motor control board and recalibrate the quartz reference circuit.

📦 CAPACITOR REPLACEMENT SUMMARY BY MODEL:
• Beogram 8000: 24 electrolytic caps + 4 film upgrades
• Beogram 8002: 36 electrolytic caps + 8 film upgrades
• Beogram 9500: 45 electrolytic caps + 10 film upgrades
• Beogram RX2: 24 electrolytic caps + 4 film upgrades
🔧 MY BRAND PREFERENCES:
• Main filter caps: Nichicon KG, Nichicon PW, Panasonic FC
• General low ESR: Nichicon PW, Panasonic FC, Nichicon HE
• Audio signal path (RIAA): Nichicon FG (Fine Gold), Elna Silmic II
• RIAA EQ capacitors: Polystyrene or polypropylene film, 1% tolerance
• Coupling capacitors (small values): WIMA MKS2
• Timing/Servo circuits: Nichicon PW, WIMA film
⚠️ MY CAPACITOR REPLACEMENT RULES:
1. Replace EVERY electrolytic capacitor – I don't judge by appearance.
2. Document polarity before removal – incorrect polarity causes immediate failure.
3. Use only 105°C rated capacitors – original caps were often 85°C.
4. Upgrade small-value electrolytics to film – 10µF or smaller in signal path.
5. RIAA EQ capacitors get 1% tolerance for accurate equalization.
6. After recap, verify all voltage rails on a variac.
7. 60-minute burn-in before final calibration.
