About the Beovision TV Series & My Approach
The Bang & Olufsen Beovision series spans decades of television innovation β from the classic CRT-based Beovision 1, 2, and 3 of the 1990s, through the plasma Beovision 4, 5, and 9, the LCD Beovision 6, 7, 8, 11, and 14, to the modern LED/LCD Beovision Avant (55", 75", 85") and the OLED Beovision Eclipse. Each generation features B&O's signature design, premium audio, and innovative motorized stands. β οΈ Common Beovision TV Issues by Model Type β What I Fix
Electrolytic capacitors in the power supply dry out over time. Symptoms include: no power, intermittent operation, humming, or complete failure. I perform a complete recap of all power supply boards using premium Japanese 105Β°C capacitors.
The motorized stand mechanism can fail due to worn motor, gear damage, or control board capacitor failure. Symptoms include: stand won't rotate, grinding noise, or stuck position. I repair motors, replace gears, and recap control boards.
CRT televisions have unique failure points: dim picture, focus problems, color purity issues, flyback transformer failure. I restore CRT circuits, rejuvenate CRTs when possible, and replace flyback transformers.
Plasma panels can develop burn-in, flicker, or complete failure. I diagnose plasma issues, replace buffer boards, Y-sustain boards, X-sustain boards, and locate replacement panels when needed.
LED backlight strips can fail or flicker due to driver board issues or failed LEDs. I diagnose backlight problems, replace LED strips, and repair driver boards.
OLED panels can develop burn-in, color shifts, or dead pixels. I diagnose OLED panel issues, update firmware, and locate replacement panels when needed.
Often caused by failed power supply or main board capacitors. I rebuild power supplies, recap main boards, and test all voltage rails.
The integrated sound system can fail due to bad capacitors in the amplifier board or failed speaker drivers. I recap audio boards, test amplifiers, and replace faulty drivers. Speaker foam rot is common on older Beovision 1,2,3 models.
Input boards can fail due to static damage or bad capacitors. Symptoms include: no signal on specific inputs, intermittent connections. I repair or replace input boards.
Built-in DVD players fail due to belt issues or laser failure. I service the DVD mechanism, replace belts, and align/replace the laser.
The built-in rechargeable battery degrades over time. I replace the battery and service the charging circuit.

π§ Professional Beovision Troubleshooting β From My Workbench
- First, verify AC input voltage and check the IEC power cord.
- Check the main fuse on the power supply board β if blown, there's likely a short in the primary section.
- Inspect the standby power supply β measure 5V standby rail. If missing, I check startup resistors and the PWM controller IC.
- Common failure: Primary-side electrolytic capacitors β I always replace these with 105Β°C low-ESR types.
- Test all voltage rails: +24V (backlight), +12V (main board), +5V (logic), +3.3V (processing) β CRT/plasma models have different voltage rails.
- Dim picture: Check CRT emissions with CRT tester β rejuvenate if weak.
- Out of focus: Adjust focus control on flyback transformer β if won't sharpen, replace flyback.
- Color purity issues: Degauss with external wand, adjust purity rings on CRT neck.
- Retrace lines: G2 voltage too high β adjust screen control on flyback.
- No HV: Check horizontal output transistor (HOT) and flyback transformer.
- No picture, clicking sound: Check Y-sustain board for shorted transistors.
- Vertical lines: Bad buffer board β replace buffer ICs or entire board.
- Flickering picture: Check power supply capacitors β recap power supply board.
- Burn-in: Some burn-in can be reduced with pixel shifting β permanent burn-in requires panel replacement.
- First, check if the stand makes any sound when trying to move β grinding indicates gear issues.
- Replace all electrolytic capacitors on the motor control board β this fixes many issues.
- If the motor runs but doesn't move, the gear train may be stripped β I replace damaged gears.
- If the motor doesn't run at all, test the motor windings β replace if open or shorted.
- Recalibrate the stand end-points after repair.
- If dim or flickering, first check the backlight driver board and its electrolytic capacitors.
- Measure the LED backlight voltage β low voltage indicates driver board issues.
- Replace all capacitors on the backlight driver board β I've fixed countless dim displays this way.
- If individual LED strips fail, I can replace them. I have access to genuine backlight assemblies.
- Check the backlight enable signal from the main board β if missing, the issue is on the main board.
- First, test external speakers or headphones to isolate internal vs external audio.
- For Beovision 1,2,3: Speaker foam surrounds rot β I replace with new foam kits.
- Inspect the audio amplifier IC on the main or separate audio board β measure speaker outputs for DC offset.
- Replace electrolytic capacitors in the audio signal path β they cause distortion when aged.
- Check the speaker drivers β test with a multimeter (should read 4-8 ohms).
- Common capacitor failures: Power supply primary caps (8-12 years), main board SMD electrolytics (8-10 years).
- I use only 105Β°C low-ESR capacitors from Panasonic, Nichicon, or United Chemi-Con. No exceptions.
- For CRT flyback and deflection circuits, I use high-voltage rated capacitors.
- For audio signal path caps, I use Nichicon FG, Elna Silmic II, or WIMA films for small values.
- I replace all capacitors on the power supply board regardless of visual appearance β they age even if not bulging.
- I document capacitor polarity before removal with photos β incorrect polarity causes immediate failure.
- After recap, I verify all voltage rails and allow 60 minutes of burn-in before full calibration.
